MSc in Plant Protection

The several thousand years’ history of plant production is at the same time the history of plant protection, the management of pests, diseases and weeds. In the early stage of pest management a large number of lost battles are recorded resulting in tremendous yield loss, famine and desertion of area at the end.

There is no plant production without pest management even in these days. In course of time, the procedures of plant production as well as the pests had changed and the control of pests had been developed significantly. In these days, the scientifically established procedures of pest management render rather possible the effective and at the same time environmentally safe control of pests. In fact, in the frame of biological control the same is achieved without using pesticides. Successful pest management is based upon thorough knowledge of plant production procedures and cultivated plant-pest interactions, and it carefully gauges the possibilities and risks of plant protection treatments.

Aim of study

To train experts in plant protection, who know regulations and processes concerning growing and protection of plants, production of healthy food and fodder and their quality insurance, and risks of plant growing, their pests and diseases, effect mechanism of chemicals used in plant protection, work and food hygienic, and labour protection precautions, their environmental and human relations. Who are able to synthesize application of agricultural, plant protection, natural historical, technical, sociologic and economic basic knowledge acquired on course of the training in the field of agricultural science. Who are able to participate scientific, doctoral and postgraduate specialist training.

Education is running as full time course. For Hungarian citizens for state support (free of tuition fee) can be obtained.

For self financed students the fee is: 400 000 HUF/semester

The study period is 4 semesters.

Graduated masters of plant protection are suitable for:

  • diagnose pests and diseases of plants, organise, execute and direct effective protection against them,
  • perform a directing tasks of practical official plant protection quarantine protection in public administration,
  • perform directing tasks of plant protection in an enterprise,
  • forecast epidemics and gradations, prevent damages, recognise plant damaging organisations in time,
  • perform phytosanitary tasks, analyse effects,
  • conduct quarantine protection against quarantine pests,
  • elaborate and implement environment friendly plant protection procedures,
  • adapt and improve new plant protection methods,
  • apply plant protection procedures decreasing pesticide load of the environment,
  • ecological protection,
  • implement integrated plant protection,
  • execute and control production processes, and realise research tasks.
